Thankful Thursday

Every Thursday (or most Thursdays) I try to focus on one thing I’m thankful for.  I actually try to focus on what I’m thankful for every single day .  However,  just in case I get bogged down with things that do not matter,  I have dedicated a day of the week to remind me to focus on what I’m thankful for.

Today I’m so thankful for Spring in Texas!  I love this weather we are having and I’m so thankful to God for allowing us to have this nice cool weather before we must endure the HOT summer, which will be here before we know it.  It gets to be about 150 degrees here in Texas.  Okay maybe that is an exaggeration, but it feels that hot sometimes.

Today I’m just thankful that there is a nice breeze, sunny skies and the flowers are blooming.  It is a great time of year and I’m much more appreciative of it this year because we just had one of our hottest summers followed by one of our coldest winters.

Lord, thank you for blessing us with this beautiful weather!  I’m trying to get out there and enjoy it as much as I can.

In honor of Thanksgiving this week, I want to focus on being thankful all the time.  I’ve written before about a Gratitude Journal because I think it is important to be thankful on a daily basis.  We should rise in the morning with thankful hearts and go to sleep at night thanking God for the blessings of that day.  I, however, do not do this on a regular basis I’m sad to say.

I am going to work on making this a habit, with God’s help.  Like everything else I need God’s help with my bad habits and with creating good habits.  I’m so thankful He is there for me!  I do thank Him every morning for just being there for me.  It is so comforting to know He is ALWAYS there.

Here is a list of what else I’m thankful for today:

  1. My time with God every single day.
  2. My husband and our relationship with God and each other.
  3. My health.
  4. My kids, their health, their happiness, and their own relationships with God.
  5. The counseling opportunity that has come my way.
  6. My husband’s recent job interview and other opportunities.
  7. The lessons God has provided for me this year (as difficult as they sometimes are), because I know He is using them to shape me into who He intended me to be.
  8. My family and friends.
  9. Our pets (minus their shedding hair).
  10. The city we live in.

  What are you thankful for?

A Gratitude Journal

Recently I read about a gratitude journal and it caught my interest.  What a great idea I thought.  I love journaling, so this should be easy.  I have a few extra journals, so I’m going to dedicate one as my “Journal of Thanks”.  I am going to fill it each day with all of the things I am thankful for.

We tend to focus and dwell on those things we are NOT thankful for, but what we should be doing is focusing on all of the blessings God has given us.  There are those that believe the more thankful you are, the more good things happen to you.

I just know that it will be great to think about and write down those things I am thankful for when I wake up.  I may also write in it when I go to bed, writing about all the things I am thankful for that happened during the day.   I just can’t help but think about how nice it will be to read back over what I’ve written.  When I’m having a blah day, or I’m just not in a great mood, reading this journal will surely change my mood.

The article I read about this (in the Nov. 2009 issue of Natural Health magazine) stated that people who write down what they are thankful for are 25 percent happier, exercise 33 percent more a week and sleep 30 minutes longer each night, and have 10 percent lower blood pressure.  Wow, so being thankful is not only good for my mood and spirit, but good for my health!  I better get started.

P.S. Today I am thankful for allergy medicine.  We are in the prime season for my awful hay fever allergies, but thanks to my allergy medicine (being taken regularly) I am feeling very minimal symptoms.  Hallelujah.  Last year I can not say the same was true.

Have a great day and thank about what you are thankful for today, and maybe even write it down.

I’m Thankful for Our Kids

Today is once again Thankful Thursday.  I think it’s so important to remember to be thankful.  I know we shouldn’t have to remind ourselves to be thankful.  But I think it’s necessary.  I believe we should wake up every single day and start the day by telling God all the things we are thankful for.  I, myself, do not always remember to do that.  But that is my goal.

I’m going to try my best to remember to say thanks to God for everything I’m thankful for, the minute I open my eyes in the morning.  Another idea is to start a Journal of Thanks.  And just fill it each day with all the things you are thankful for.

Today (and really everyday) I’m thankful for our kids.  My daughter is about to turn 7 and is in first grade, and my step son is 12 and is in 6th grade this year.  It is his first year in middle school.  Which of course brings a lot of changes.

They are great kids.  They have good hearts and are learning a lot about the Bible ,and how to have a relationship with God.  We try to teach them about God as much as we can, and how to apply it to their day-to-day life.

Being a parent is one of the greatest and hardest roles all wrapped into one.  Raising children can be extremely challenging at times.  Sometimes more than others.  And you just hope you are doing the right thing.  But it can also be such a joy when you see them make the right decisions.  When they tell you they read something in the Bible, or that they helped out a friend, or they want to join a Bible study, or they helped out at school, or they want to give their allowance money to people who need it more…….you just feel so proud of these human beings you are responsible for.  As they get older I know we will have many more challenging times, but just as many, if not more,  joyous and proud times.

It’s the hard things in life that bring so much joy.  The relationships we put the most investment in ,and work at the hardest, are the most rewarding.

So, today I am thankful that God gave me the opportunity to have two children in this lifetime.   Those two kids are a gift that I will forever cherish.   I take my role as a mother very seriously, yet I want to have a lot of fun in the process.  I want my kids to know the truth about God, to have a loving relationship with God, and to know they have parents that love them and want the best for them.  I also want them to remember how much we laughed together.

Thank you Lord for trusting me with these kids.  I won’t let you down.

Thankful Thursdays

I follow Lisa Welchel on Twitter.   Yes, she was Blaire on “The Facts of Life” TV show.  She is now one of the speakers with Women of Faith.  Last week or the week before, she mentioned that she has Thankful Thursdays.  On Thursdays, she makes a point to express the things she is thankful for.  I think that is a great idea, so I’m starting today.

I’m thankful for so many things in my life, but today I’m going to focus on a few blessings that stand out to me at the moment.

First of all, I’m so thankful that I have a husband who I can talk to, confide in, laugh with, share with, and have fun with.  I know I can talk to him about anything.  Even if it seems silly to me, he always makes me feel as if it’s not.  I trust him completely and I feel 100% safe in our conversations and in our relationship.  That is something I never had in the past, and I thank God everyday for bringing him to me.  He only helps me to be a better me.

I’m also actually thankful for Thursdays.  Thursday is the day that my husband and I have together.  I call it our “date day”.  Once we drop the kids off at school in the morning, we have a day to ourselves.  Both of our kids are with their other parent on Thursday nights.  So it is the one day we do not pick them up from school, etc.  Don’t get me wrong, we love our kids more than anything….but….we really enjoy and cherish the time we have together.  It’s just our day.  And I’m so thankful we have it.  As I type this, I’m here at my husband’s office with him.  I’m usually at home working, and he goes to his office.  On Thursdays, I come with him to work now….and it’s a great day.  We can discuss work related issues, or just anything that comes up during the day.  Then at night, we have our date night.  We sometimes just go to dinner.  Or we make dinner at home, and watch a movie.  Sometimes we go out on the Mobile Loaves and Fishes truck together or we go see a movie.  It’s important time for us to strengthen our relationship and become closer.  Everyone should have a date day or night.  I believe it’s part of a good marriage, and essential for a great marriage.

What are you thankful for today?
