Thankful Thursday

In honor of Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for something a little different today.  I have really been wanting to get healthier lately.  I recently had my check-up and my cholesterol was a little bit over what it should be.  Not a huge deal, but I was surprised because I’ve never had anything like that before.  Also, my scale recently showed me a number that I’ve never seen before.  Yikes!  So…I’m really trying to become healthier in what I choose to eat.  I’m incorporating more fruits and vegetables, and glasses of water, etc.  I’m also watching the cholesterol and fat content of what I eat as well as trying to exercise daily.

So what am I thankful for?  I’m thankful for the fact that the only thing between me and a healthy lifestyle is myself.  That’s it.  I can do this all on my own.  I do not have to join a health club, because I can walk and run in my neighborhood.  I do not have to pay anybody for their advice, because I know what needs to be done.  I do not have to wait for anything at all.  I do not have to save up money, hope for the best or even leave it up to God.  I am definitely asking Him for His help, but ultimately it’s all within my own abilities.

I’m thankful that I have all the resources available to me to make healthy changes to my lifestyle for good.   Most importantly I have the freedom and the will to do it.

I recently added an app to my phone that helps me keep track of where I am each day.  You can input all of your meals and it helps you with the calorie content.  You can also track how many glasses of water you have had and your exercise for the day.  It has weight loss plans that help you personalize how many calories to eat each day to lose the weight you want to lose.  I love it.  It also gives you your totals for the day.  For instance it lists out how much fiber you had total for the day, how much cholesterol, etc.  It also gives you that information individually by food.  It’s pretty helpful and all I have to do is make good choices and keep track of them.

Here is the website where you can check out the internet version:

I feel good and I’m so thankful for the temple God has given me and that it is my choice to take care of it.  All I have to do is choose to do so.

Thankful Thursday

Every Thursday (or most Thursdays) I try to focus on one thing I’m thankful for.  I actually try to focus on what I’m thankful for every single day .  However,  just in case I get bogged down with things that do not matter,  I have dedicated a day of the week to remind me to focus on what I’m thankful for.

Today I’m so thankful for Spring in Texas!  I love this weather we are having and I’m so thankful to God for allowing us to have this nice cool weather before we must endure the HOT summer, which will be here before we know it.  It gets to be about 150 degrees here in Texas.  Okay maybe that is an exaggeration, but it feels that hot sometimes.

Today I’m just thankful that there is a nice breeze, sunny skies and the flowers are blooming.  It is a great time of year and I’m much more appreciative of it this year because we just had one of our hottest summers followed by one of our coldest winters.

Lord, thank you for blessing us with this beautiful weather!  I’m trying to get out there and enjoy it as much as I can.

Thankful for My Roles

I am so thankful for the roles I get to perform each and every day.  I’m thankful to God for the roles he has given me and I’m also thankful for the roles he has not given me.

I love that I get to focus on taking care of my family each day.  I’ll be honest though, sometimes that includes jobs and tasks that I do not particularly like or enjoy.  However, the fact that God has put me in this role and allows me to make a difference in the lives of my family, humbles me.  I’m honored that I have the responsibility to clothe, feed and take care of my family and our house.   I do not take my role lightly.  I put a lot of time, energy and commitment into making my husband’s home life more enjoyable, easier and relaxing.  I also make sure our kids are well fed, well dressed, well cared for and are continually learning what it means to be a Christian in today’s world.

The role I have is an important one and I know that.  A few years ago I was a single mother, working full-time at a stressful job and doing my best to take care of my daughter.  I did the best I could with the role I was given at the time.  It’s a tough job being a single mom and I respect each mother who is struggling with that role right now.  If you know a single mother, reach out and offer a hand every now and then.  They will appreciate it!

Today, I’m married to a wonderful man who sees his role as providing for our family, leading us and protecting us.  He does each of those roles very well and I’m so thankful for that!  If it was my role  to provide, lead and protect, we would be in trouble.  Luckily it is not.  My role is to nurture and teach.  Thank you God for knowing my strengths and more importantly my weaknesses!

A Gratitude Journal

Recently I read about a gratitude journal and it caught my interest.  What a great idea I thought.  I love journaling, so this should be easy.  I have a few extra journals, so I’m going to dedicate one as my “Journal of Thanks”.  I am going to fill it each day with all of the things I am thankful for.

We tend to focus and dwell on those things we are NOT thankful for, but what we should be doing is focusing on all of the blessings God has given us.  There are those that believe the more thankful you are, the more good things happen to you.

I just know that it will be great to think about and write down those things I am thankful for when I wake up.  I may also write in it when I go to bed, writing about all the things I am thankful for that happened during the day.   I just can’t help but think about how nice it will be to read back over what I’ve written.  When I’m having a blah day, or I’m just not in a great mood, reading this journal will surely change my mood.

The article I read about this (in the Nov. 2009 issue of Natural Health magazine) stated that people who write down what they are thankful for are 25 percent happier, exercise 33 percent more a week and sleep 30 minutes longer each night, and have 10 percent lower blood pressure.  Wow, so being thankful is not only good for my mood and spirit, but good for my health!  I better get started.

P.S. Today I am thankful for allergy medicine.  We are in the prime season for my awful hay fever allergies, but thanks to my allergy medicine (being taken regularly) I am feeling very minimal symptoms.  Hallelujah.  Last year I can not say the same was true.

Have a great day and thank about what you are thankful for today, and maybe even write it down.

I’m Thankful for Our Kids

Today is once again Thankful Thursday.  I think it’s so important to remember to be thankful.  I know we shouldn’t have to remind ourselves to be thankful.  But I think it’s necessary.  I believe we should wake up every single day and start the day by telling God all the things we are thankful for.  I, myself, do not always remember to do that.  But that is my goal.

I’m going to try my best to remember to say thanks to God for everything I’m thankful for, the minute I open my eyes in the morning.  Another idea is to start a Journal of Thanks.  And just fill it each day with all the things you are thankful for.

Today (and really everyday) I’m thankful for our kids.  My daughter is about to turn 7 and is in first grade, and my step son is 12 and is in 6th grade this year.  It is his first year in middle school.  Which of course brings a lot of changes.

They are great kids.  They have good hearts and are learning a lot about the Bible ,and how to have a relationship with God.  We try to teach them about God as much as we can, and how to apply it to their day-to-day life.

Being a parent is one of the greatest and hardest roles all wrapped into one.  Raising children can be extremely challenging at times.  Sometimes more than others.  And you just hope you are doing the right thing.  But it can also be such a joy when you see them make the right decisions.  When they tell you they read something in the Bible, or that they helped out a friend, or they want to join a Bible study, or they helped out at school, or they want to give their allowance money to people who need it more…….you just feel so proud of these human beings you are responsible for.  As they get older I know we will have many more challenging times, but just as many, if not more,  joyous and proud times.

It’s the hard things in life that bring so much joy.  The relationships we put the most investment in ,and work at the hardest, are the most rewarding.

So, today I am thankful that God gave me the opportunity to have two children in this lifetime.   Those two kids are a gift that I will forever cherish.   I take my role as a mother very seriously, yet I want to have a lot of fun in the process.  I want my kids to know the truth about God, to have a loving relationship with God, and to know they have parents that love them and want the best for them.  I also want them to remember how much we laughed together.

Thank you Lord for trusting me with these kids.  I won’t let you down.
